IN THE STORY
Answers, not more problems.
Merchants are being robbed on every road into Kyiv. No trade means no taxes, and the treasury is running dry. When Kirill arrives with news of a creature at the gates, Mikhail sends him with the heroes to find Baba Yaga and bring back answers.
THE HISTORY BEHIND HIM
A real prince in the path of invasion.
Mikhail Vsevolodovich of Chernihiv was a historical Rurikid prince who held Kyiv in the years just before the Mongol sack of the city in 1240. He was later killed by the Mongols and eventually canonized as a martyr by the Orthodox Church. Golden Gates places its own version of him on the throne in that same threatened moment — the last fragile window before the world changes. The historical ruler is the foundation; the vanity, the court comedy, the tiny dog, and the encounters with our heroes belong to the show. We kept the name, the title, the timing, and the pressure of approaching catastrophe. Everything else is ours.
THEIR WORLD
A throne is no protection from everything.
Sergei brings the bad news. Dobrynya brings the newcomer. Olga arrives with a tiny Maltese that eats caviar and bites the royal hand. Mikhail can order the heroes into the forest. The dog remains unimpressed.
