Nastasya

IN THE STORY

Dobrynya knows when to talk. Nastasya knows when that is not enough.

Nastasya is a warrior in her own right, and Dobrynya's wife. He is the diplomat and teacher. She is the woman who beat him before she married him, and has never let him forget it.

The joke is not that she carries a spear. The joke is that her husband knows exactly how well she can use it.

THE WOMAN BEHIND THE ARMOR

She does not need to borrow his strength.

Long braid. Mail and armor. Red cloak. A spear in her hand and a sword at her side. Nastasya belongs among the warriors, not behind them.

She is taller than Dobrynya. She is stronger than Dobrynya. He can live with that. He has had practice.

THE FOLKLORE BEHIND HER

A warrior from the byliny.

Nastasya belongs to the epic tradition of the byliny, not to the biography of a documented princess. In a telling of Dobrynya and Nastasya, his blows barely trouble her. She pulls him from his horse, carries him in a leather bag, and later chooses him as her husband.

Golden Gates keeps the strength and the marriage, and makes its own life around them. She was a warrior before she was his wife. The wedding did not change that.

HER WORLD

Two warriors. More than one way to win.

Dobrynya can read a room, negotiate and teach. Nastasya gives that polished confidence someone who knows the man behind it. Their teasing is played with love, not contempt.

Beside the court's arguments and the heroes' adventures, their marriage is another kind of partnership: neither has to become smaller for the other to stand tall.

WHY SHE MATTERS

The legends have room for her too.

The bogatyrs are not the only people who can carry a weapon or command a story. Nastasya brings another warrior into that world without needing to become a copy of her husband.

She is not waiting to be rescued. Dobrynya knows that better than anyone.
