Golden Gates

The character chronicle

Sergei

Sergei existing character artwork

The court alchemist.

"Every mystery is a question worth asking."

IN THE STORY

No trade. No taxes. No easy answers.

Sergei sees the trouble behind the empty treasury: merchants are being robbed on every road into Kyiv. When Kirill describes the creature that chased him, Sergei asks whether the attacks are connected. Then he names the person who knows that forest better than the court does: Baba Yaga.

To him, the unknown is not a reason to stop looking. It is where the work begins.

THE MIND BEHIND THE MYSTERY

A scientist at the edge of the known world.

Sergei is an honest advisor who wants to help his king, and an alchemist who believes the world still has secrets worth discovering. He observes, tests, makes things and asks the next question.

The kingdom needs something useful. Sergei wants to understand why it works.

In a world where faith, authority and unfamiliar knowledge meet, even a sincere question can make the room uncomfortable.

That is his danger: He is loyal, but he cannot stop asking. And in a court that wants answers, a man who keeps asking better questions is both the most useful man in the room — and the most unsettling.

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND HIM

The scholar and the magician were once the same man.

Sergei draws inspiration from John Dee, the Elizabethan scholar whose interests ranged from mathematics and navigation to alchemy and attempts to speak with angels.

Dee lived centuries after the world of Golden Gates. He is an inspiration, not a claim of historical continuity.

Sergei is our own man: a trusted advisor whose search for useful knowledge leads him toward mysteries the court would rather leave alone.

THE SECRET HE CARRIES

He does not believe in magic. He believes in work.

Sergei keeps a private ledger the court never sees. In it, he writes down what he tried, what failed, what burned, what sang, and what he still cannot explain.

He has one entry he has rewritten seven times and never shown Mikhail:

"What if the forest is not hiding something from us? What if it is trying to tell us something we have forgotten how to hear?"

He will not say this aloud in court. Not yet.

THEIR WORLD

The court wants answers. The world keeps its secrets.

Beyond the throne room lie forests, unfamiliar traditions and people who may know something his books do not. Sergei wants discoveries that can help his king, wherever the search takes him.

His trained crows are his beloved companions. He plays with them, talks to them and sees poetry in their cleverness. The man studying the mysteries of nature is also the man making a fuss over his birds.

The crows are not a trick. They are his proof: that cleverness lives in places the court does not look.

WHY PEOPLE GET OBSESSED WITH HIM

Because Sergei is the only man in Kyiv who will say: "I don't know. Let's find out."

Everyone else in court performs certainty. Mikhail performs power. The boyars perform loyalty. Dobrynya performs courtesy.

Sergei performs curiosity — and curiosity is addictive.

Fans will come for the alchemy. They will stay because he makes them feel smarter for asking questions the world told them to stop asking.
